Famine Crisis in Gaza Strip Raises Concerns for Health and Wellness
In recent months, aid agencies have been sounding the alarm about the risk of famine in the Gaza Strip. Tragically, 20 people have already died of malnutrition in hospitals in the northern part of Gaza, with many more believed to be dying without medical attention. The World Health Organization has confirmed at least 10 child deaths from starvation, highlighting the severity of the crisis.
Israeli officials have denied claims that they are limiting aid entering the region, but the situation on the ground tells a different story. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification is currently evaluating the situation in Gaza to determine if a famine declaration is necessary. Famine, as defined by extreme food scarcity, comes with specific guidelines for classification, and the process is a complex one involving an independent committee and data analysis.
Assessing hunger in Gaza presents unique challenges due to limited access, especially following attacks in October that essentially cut off the region from the outside world. Aid convoys have struggled to meet the needs of Gaza’s population, particularly in the most severely affected northern region where access has been inconsistent. An incident involving an Israeli convoy resulted in deaths and prompted the U.S. to drop aid, further complicating efforts to provide much-needed assistance.
The World Food Program has faced difficulties delivering aid to the north of Gaza, resorting to air drops in an attempt to reach those in need. Data collection methods are being adjusted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, adding another layer of complexity to an already dire situation. As the world watches and waits for a decision on a famine declaration, the health and wellness of Gaza’s population hang in the balance.
