In an exciting turn of events, NASA has reestablished contact with the Voyager 1 spacecraft after more than five months of radio silence. The problem was identified as a corrupted chip in the spacecraft’s flight data subsystem (FDS), which caused the loss of communication.
Engineers were faced with a challenging task as they were unable to repair the chip. Instead, they had to devise a plan to divide and relocate the affected code in the FDS memory. After successfully relocating the code, Voyager 1 resumed sending engineering updates to Earth. The team is now working on returning science data in the coming weeks.
Launched in 1977, Voyager 1 made history by entering interstellar space in 2012. Its twin spacecraft, Voyager 2, continues to operate normally and holds the title of being the second-farthest spacecraft from Earth.
