NASA successfully restored communication with Voyager 1, the farthest human-made object in space, after it had stopped sending data back to Earth nearly five months ago. The issue was found to be a faulty chip in the Flight Data Subsystem (FDS) of the spacecraft, located over 15 billion miles away.
Engineers at NASA had to divide and relocate the affected code in the FDS memory to solve the problem. After careful reconfiguration of the code, changes were successfully transmitted to Voyager 1 on April 18. This led to a response from the spacecraft on April 20, confirming that the modification worked.
Moving forward, NASA plans to continue adjusting and moving other affected portions of the FDS software in the coming months. Voyager 1, launched in 1977 on a mission to explore gas giant planets in the solar system, has since traveled to the edges of interstellar space.
This successful restoration of communication with Voyager 1 is a significant achievement for NASA and demonstrates the agency’s dedication to continuing to explore and gather data from the far reaches of our solar system and beyond.
