Tensions Rise as Ukrainian Attacks Lead to Casualties in Russian City
In a recent escalation of conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Ukrainian shelling of the Russian city of Belgorod has resulted in the death of two people and the injury of three others, regional officials report. The incident has raised concerns as Russia claims to have thwarted a new attempt by saboteurs to cross the border from Ukraine into the Belgorod and Kursk regions.
The situation further escalated when the Russian Volunteer Corps claimed to have captured 25 Russian soldiers after they crossed the border on Tuesday. Videos have surfaced showing smoke rising and falling shrapnel in the Belgorod region after Russian air defenses shot down 15 rockets.
In addition to the shelling in Belgorod, Ukrainian drone attacks have caused fires at an oil refinery in the Samara region and near a polling station in the Zaporizhzhia region. The attacks come shortly after a Russian assault on the Ukrainian port city of Odesa, which resulted in the deaths of at least 21 people.
In response to the Odesa assault, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy promised a “just response” to the attack in a video address. The situation remains tense as both countries continue to exchange fire and casualties mount on both sides.
