In a historic move, Sweden has officially joined NATO as the 32nd member of the alliance, putting an end to decades of post-World War II neutrality. This decision comes as a response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with President Joe Biden congratulating Sweden on its admission and stating that it has united the alliance.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson was invited as a guest of honor to attend Biden’s State of the Union address, where Sweden’s “instrument of accession” was officially deposited at the State Department, with Secretary of State Antony Blinken presiding over the ceremony.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg described it as a historic day and emphasized Sweden’s protection under Article 5 of the NATO treaty. Despite objections from Turkey and Hungary, both countries have now ratified Sweden’s admission to NATO.
During his address, Biden highlighted the need for military assistance to Ukraine and voiced support for Ukraine’s eventual membership in NATO. The addition of Sweden to the alliance further strengthens NATO’s collective defense and security efforts in the face of ongoing global threats.
