In surprising news for the gaming industry, Take-Two Interactive has made the decision to shut down two indie-size studios under its Private Division label. Roll7, based in the UK, and Intercept Games, located in Seattle, are the latest casualties of the cost reduction program implemented by the gaming giant.
According to internal documentation obtained by Bloomberg, plans for the closure of Roll7 have been revealed, with severance agreements being offered to affected staff. Intercept Games, known for the popular Kerbal Space Program 2, will also be shutting down, impacting approximately 70 employees in the Seattle office.
The layoffs have not only affected the UK and Seattle studios but have also impacted staff at Private Division locations in Seattle, New York, Las Vegas, and Munich. Take-Two has issued a statement confirming the cost reduction program and streamlining of its organizational structure as the reasons behind the layoffs.
Despite the setbacks, Private Division continues to forge ahead with its game releases. Moon Studio’s No Rest for the Wicked has been launched, and work on Kerbal Space Program 2 is ongoing. Additionally, the label is planning to release Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of the Rings Game in the future.
This move comes after Take-Two had previously announced plans to lay off 5% of its staff, around 580 employees, as part of its cost-cutting measures. The gaming community will be watching closely to see how these changes will impact the future projects under Private Division and Take-Two Interactive as a whole.
