St. Mary’s County, [Location] – In a devastating turn of events, Kourtni Smith, a 34-year-old mother from St Mary’s County, has recently received a devastating cancer diagnosis. Diagnosed with stage 4 invasive lobular carcinoma back in April, Smith has been informed that her time is limited to just a couple of months.
Fear kept Smith from seeking medical assistance sooner, and when she finally gathered the strength to consult a doctor, she was devastated to discover that the cancer had already spread to her brain. In an effort to prevent others from making the same mistake, she bravely shares her story to serve as a poignant warning to anyone who may be hesitant to seek medical help.
With the little time she has left, Smith is focusing on creating precious memories with her beloved family. Heartbreakingly, she will leave behind her husband and five children, aged 16, 14, 12, 9, and 2.
Smith’s battle with cancer began in 2021 when she was initially diagnosed with stage 3 of the disease. However, fear kept her from seeking prompt medical attention, despite noticing a concerning dimple on her breast. It was only when she was unable to produce milk for her newborn that she finally sought medical help.
Currently in hospice, Smith’s primary care team is working diligently to keep her comfortable with pain medication. Despite enduring multiple rounds of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, the cancer relentlessly progressed to stage 4. Due to the limitations of her frail body, Smith is now unable to continue with further treatments.
In an effort to provide financial support for her grieving husband as he transitions into a single father role, Smith has started a GoFundMe campaign. Thus far, the campaign has garnered an overwhelming response, with $72,710 raised.
In addition, Smith has embarked on a special project close to her heart. She is currently working on a children’s book, which will serve as a lasting legacy for her five precious children. Above all, she is fervently hoping to make it to December for one final Christmas with her family.
Kourtni Smith’s story is a heart-wrenching reminder of the importance of timely medical intervention. By sharing her journey, she hopes to encourage others to overcome their fears and seek medical help when needed. Her indomitable spirit and desire to leave a positive impact during her final days are truly inspirational.
