Israel’s National Library Defies Adversity, Opens New Building Amidst Crisis
In the face of adversity, Israel’s National Library has opened its doors to visitors, providing a much-needed haven amidst the ongoing chaos. While the anticipated grand opening ceremony for its new building had to be canceled due to the Oct. 7 attacks, the library’s decision to proceed with the opening demonstrates a commitment to resilience and hope.
Hana Cooper, a librarian at the National Library, has taken on a critical role in archiving violent images of the assault. Cooper’s dedication to documenting this tragedy highlights the library’s mission to preserve history, even in the most challenging times.
As the nation continues to grapple with the aftermath of the attacks, various cultural institutions such as museums, cinemas, and theaters have shut down temporarily. These establishments have implemented emergency protocols to safeguard priceless artworks and historical treasures from any potential harm.
The National Library had initially planned to inaugurate its impressive new $225 million building on Oct. 17. However, it seemed inevitable that the opening would be indefinitely postponed. Yet, in an effort to bring a sense of normalcy to the disrupted nation, the library ultimately decided to open its doors on Oct. 29.
The library’s presence has proven to be therapeutic for its visitors, including evacuees and reservists, who have experienced the constant threat of rockets and shells. To further support those affected by the crisis, the library has stocked mobile libraries and established a “pop-up” school to provide education for displaced children.
Visitors to the library’s reading room will also find a poignant exhibition honoring the hostages taken on Oct. 7. A chair representing each hostage has been placed, with a book carefully chosen to symbolize their spirit and resilience.
Beyond its role as a refuge, the National Library has been actively salvaging and digitizing local archives from ravaged communities. Additionally, it has begun archiving WhatsApp conversations for their documentary value. The library’s expertise has also been instrumental in supporting grass-roots documentation efforts, including the collection of oral testimonies from survivors and the implementation of AI analysis for video footage.
Above all, the National Library aims to guide Israelis in navigating the current turbulent times. It serves as a symbol of hope during this ongoing nightmare, offering a sanctuary where individuals can seek solace, knowledge, and understanding.
