Australian police are investigating a shocking incident at a church in Wakeley, outside of Sydney, where a bishop and priest were stabbed during a livestreamed mass. The police have classified the attack as a “terrorist incident” and have a 16-year-old male suspect in custody.
Police Commissioner Karen Webb has stated that the incident is believed to be motivated by religious extremism. The horrifying video of the attack shows Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel being stabbed in the chest by the suspect, while churchgoers rushed to his aid.
Following the attack, an angry crowd demanded vengeance and began throwing bricks and bottles at the police on the scene. In total, seven people, including police officers, were injured during the chaos.
It has been revealed that the teen suspect had a history of offenses but was not on any terror watch list. The attack comes just days after a brutal stabbing spree at a mall in Sydney that left six people dead.
Despite the violent nature of the attack, Bishop Emmanuel is currently in stable condition and is showing signs of improvement. The community is shaken by the events that unfolded at Assyrian Christ The Good Shepherd Church and is coming together to support the victims and their families during this difficult time.
