Google Chat, the popular messaging service, is about to undergo a major makeover. The platform is set to receive a homescreen redesign and will introduce Duet AI, voice messages, and interoperability with third-party messaging services.
One of the most notable additions is the introduction of voice messages, also known as audio snippets. This feature aims to enhance team collaboration by allowing recipients to hear the tone and context of the message. It is expected to be available for all 1:1 and group direct messages (DMs) in the first quarter of 2024.
The user interface (UI) for voice messages will feature a simple inline player with play/pause and duration controls, along with a waveform to visualize the audio. While it remains unclear whether there will be a time limit for voice messages, it is unlikely that transcriptions similar to those found in Google Messages will be available.
In an effort to improve communication across various messaging platforms, Google has partnered with Mio, a collaborative interoperability solution provider. This collaboration will enable messages sent using Google Chat to appear in Slack and Microsoft Teams, and vice versa. This integration will be particularly useful for companies that collaborate and use their own messaging systems.
Although the feature is currently in beta, it is expected to be widely available in the first quarter of 2024. Users who wish to utilize this functionality will need a separate Mio license/subscription, which already provides solutions for connecting Teams and Slack.
The new features and interoperability options will be available to a wide range of Google Workspace customers, including those using Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Essentials Starter, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Essentials Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Frontline Starter, Frontline Standard, and Nonprofits plans.
With these exciting updates, Google Chat aims to provide a more seamless and efficient messaging experience for both individuals and businesses. The introduction of voice messages and interoperability with other platforms will undoubtedly revolutionize the way teams communicate and collaborate. Stay tuned for these exciting changes coming to Google Chat in the near future.
