US Secretary of State Antony Blinken Pushes for Truce and Two-State Solution in Middle East Tour
In his latest diplomatic efforts in the Middle East, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken held talks with Egyptian President and Saudi Crown Prince, focusing on the ongoing crisis in Gaza. This marks Blinken’s sixth trip to the region since the conflict erupted, with a primary focus on addressing humanitarian needs in Gaza.
During the meetings, Blinken called for an immediate ceasefire and the release of hostages, while also emphasizing support for a two-state solution. The Biden administration has expressed its support for Israel’s right to defend itself, but has also stressed the importance of addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Blinken warned against an Israeli ground assault on Rafah and underscored the need to prevent the displacement of the population. Despite providing financial and diplomatic support for Israel, the Biden administration vetoed UN Security Council proposals for a ceasefire, stating that negotiations for a truce are ongoing.
The discussions also touched on the possibility of greater integration among countries in the region, particularly in terms of establishing diplomatic relations between Arab states and Israel. Saudi Arabia, however, has insisted that it will not pursue diplomatic relations with Israel unless a Palestinian state is recognized on the 1967 borders and Israeli aggression in Gaza ceases.
Blinken’s visit to Israel will be his first since the Biden administration intensified its criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Secretary of State faces challenges in navigating the delicate negotiations but remains committed to working towards a truce agreement in the region.
