Former Inmate of Norfolk City Jail Dies from Bacterial Meningitis
A tragic case of bacterial meningitis has been identified in Norfolk, Virginia, with a former inmate of the Norfolk City Jail succumbing to the illness. The inmate, who had tested positive for bacterial meningitis at a local hospital on March 8, was identified as the victim of this deadly disease.
The Norfolk Health Department promptly informed both the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office and Norfolk City Jail of the test result on March 11. In response, inmates and staff who may have come into contact with the infected individual were offered antibiotics and placed under quarantine as a precautionary measure.
Despite the risks of bacterial meningitis, which can have serious complications or even lead to death, some inmates and staff reportedly refused to take the antibiotics that were offered. However, as of now, no additional cases have been confirmed within the jail, and all quarantines have since been lifted.
The Norfolk Department of Health is currently investigating the bacterial meningitis case, emphasizing that while the illness is contagious, it is not as easily spread as a common cold or flu. There is an effective vaccine available for one strain of bacterial meningitis, Neisseria Meningitidis, which can help prevent the disease.
In a separate and unrelated case, a student from Francis Asbury Elementary School also passed away from meningitis. However, it has been confirmed that the strand of meningitis in this case differed from the one found in the Norfolk City Jail inmate.
