In a latest development in the ongoing legal battle between Epic Games and Apple, Epic has filed a motion asking Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers to enforce her original order from 2021. The order had forced Apple to allow developers of App Store apps to link to outside payments, but Apple’s updated developer policy still reserves a portion of outside payments for itself.
Christian Owens, founder of payments processor Paddle, and Benjamin Simon, founder of Down Dog fitness apps for iOS, have filed declarations supporting Epic’s argument. Owens criticized Apple’s choice offered to developers as “illusory,” while Simon pointed out that his company would have to charge more for iOS subscriptions compared to web subscriptions.
Epic also raised concerns about Apple’s requirement for developers to use a specific “Plain Button Style,” which they argue violates the injunction on steering customers towards alternative payment options. Additionally, Apple’s prohibition of multi-platform apps like Minecraft from pointing to outside payments also goes against the judge’s order, according to Epic.
Epic’s spokesperson, Natalie Muñoz, highlighted that Apple’s new policies prevent the kind of steering that Down Dog utilized in its Android apps, where users can be directed to the website for cheaper subscriptions. The outcome of this latest motion remains to be seen, but it is clear that the battle between Epic Games and Apple over App Store policies is far from over.
