United Launch Alliance (ULA) has achieved a major milestone after a decade of development and testing with the successful transportation of its first Vulcan rocket from the hangar to the launch pad. This is the first time the full-size Vulcan rocket has been observed in its complete form, as it was previously housed inside the company’s vertical hangar since its assembly last month.
ULA’s ground crew skillfully rolled the rocket and its mobile launch platform to the launch pad. The final steps before the anticipated launch include loading the rocket with propellants. The highly anticipated launch is scheduled for Monday at 2:18 am EST, with backup launch opportunities on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday if necessary.
The inaugural flight of the Vulcan rocket will carry a commercial robotic Moon lander developed by Astrobotic, serving as the primary payload. This launch holds great significance for ULA, as the Vulcan rocket will be replacing the company’s fleet of Atlas and Delta rockets. The Vulcan offers improved performance and lower costs, making it a valuable addition to ULA’s capabilities.
ULA has already secured an impressive order book for Vulcan missions. Contracts with the US military and Amazon for its Project Kuiper broadband network emphasize the rocket’s versatility and appeal to diverse sectors. Additionally, the Vulcan rocket’s first stage is powered by two BE-4 engines from Blue Origin, which have never been flown before, adding an extra layer of excitement to the launch.
Featuring an upgraded version of the Centaur V, the Vulcan’s upper stage is equipped with hydrogen-fueled RL10 engines, similar to those utilized on ULA’s previous rockets. Looking ahead, ULA plans to gradually introduce engine reuse with the Vulcan, with a specific focus on certifying the rocket for US military satellite launches. There is also the potential for launching national security payloads in the second half of this year.
As the launch date draws near, anticipation builds for ULA’s historic launch of the first Vulcan rocket. This achievement symbolizes a new era for ULA and solidifies its reputation as a leader in the space industry. Stay tuned for this exciting event that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on space exploration.
